Do any of these feel familiar? I’ve said or thought all of them. Before and after they were true. Before and after I’d seen my words move out of my head and into the world; before and after seeing my name in magazines, anthologies and my own short story collections and nonfiction books. Before and after I knew people with far longer writing histories and CVs than me were feeling exactly the same things I was.
The feelings do change. Slowly. Gradually. What changes them is the evidence we give ourselves – not huge life changes but small, regular, healthy habits.
That’s why there’s a Writers’ Gym.
The healthiest and surest way to see what’s in your head enter the world is breaking up the big, distant dream into individual goals, and tangible steps in the direction of what you want. Clocking up the evidence of visible progress, not just in your word-count but in your confidence to create.
Only you can write what you can write. But that doesn’t mean you need to do it all alone.
